BankMyCapital is a boutique consultancy, operating since 2018, that gets high-risk businesses banked and keeps them banked. We advise crypto, iGaming, forex and adult operators on bank account opening, licensing, and payment processing. 87% of the cases we take on are approved, because we do not take on the ones that are not yet bankable; we do not guarantee outcomes, we tell you honestly, in writing, who is likely to say yes before you apply. 300+ businesses placed with regulated institutions since 2018, 73% of which arrive after multiple rejections elsewhere, through a network of 50+ banking and EMI partners across the EU and offshore.

Engagements start from 1,500 EUR plus the receiving institution's own onboarding fee — that is the published floor, not a final number; exact scope is quoted in writing after a free pre-approval check. The pre-approval check itself is always free, regardless of outcome.

This file lists every public page with an expanded description so language models can plan retrieval without fetching each page individually. Shorter brand summary at /llms.txt. Sitemap at /sitemap.xml. Clean markdown copies of individual pages are available by appending .md to any page URL.

## Site pages

- [Homepage](https://bankmycapital.com/): High-risk banking, licensing and payment processing consultancy for crypto, iGaming, forex and adult businesses. States the core numbers up front: 87% approval rate on cases taken, 300+ businesses banked since 2018, and the pre-approval-before-application method that differentiates BMC from a generalist introducer.
- [Services overview](https://bankmycapital.com/services/): The four practices: Banking & EMI (flagship), Licensing, Payment Processing, and Crypto & Digital. Includes an honest bank-vs-EMI comparison table (speed, permanence, settlement rails, volume tolerance) and a BankMyCapital-vs-generalist comparison, plus an explicit "what we do not do" list (no guaranteed approval, no MATCH removal for a fee, no MCC misrepresentation, no shelf-company nominee smoke).
- [Banking & EMI](https://bankmycapital.com/services/banking/): The core service: placement with banks and EMIs whose published risk appetite covers the client's MCC, with a compliance pack built to the standard the institution expects, redundancy across more than one institution, and staying in the relationship through the first post-approval review. Typical route: eligibility read, file preparation, placement under NDA, account live plus a backup institution.
- [Licensing](https://bankmycapital.com/services/licensing/): Advisory on the licenses that make banking and payment processing possible: MGA, EMI, VASP, forex and adjacent regimes. Sequences licensing ahead of incorporation and banking so the credential obtained is the one the target bank or acquirer will actually recognise, rather than one that is cheap or fast but unbankable.
- [Payment Processing](https://bankmycapital.com/services/payment-processing/): Processing built with redundancy from day one: a primary acquirer matched to the client's MCC and licence tier, plus a backup on separate rails, so one offboarding or ratio breach slows the business down instead of stopping it. Covers reserve-term negotiation and dispute-handling workflow rebuilds acquirers require before approval.
- [Crypto & Digital](https://bankmycapital.com/services/crypto-and-digital/): Fiat on and off-ramps, VASP/CASP structuring, and banking that survives a compliance review rather than closing the moment crypto appears in the transaction flow. Addresses wallet-level analytics, travel-rule workflow, and source-of-funds narratives for flagged transactions.
- [Crypto Licensing (hub)](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/): The crypto-licensing practice: MiCA CASP authorisation, legacy/national VASP registration, and offshore crypto licences. Explains CASP vs VASP vs offshore, EU jurisdictions, the ~1 July 2026 transitional deadline, and links to the three deep-dive pages below. Sequenced so the licence obtained is the one the target bank actually recognises.
- [VASP License in Europe](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/vasp-license-europe/): Getting a VASP licence in Europe in 2026 means obtaining a MiCA CASP authorisation (Reg (EU) 2023/1114): which national competent authority regulates it, which crypto services need it, capital tiers (EUR 50k/125k/150k by service class), a 4-9 month timeline, passporting across the 27 EU/EEA states, and the common pitfalls.
- [CASP License under MiCA](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/casp-license/): The MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisation in depth: what it covers, tiered minimum capital, EU-wide passporting, AML/MLRO and EU-resident-director substance requirements, the best CASP jurisdictions (Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Malta, Cyprus), and the grandfathering deadline for existing VASPs.
- [Offshore Crypto License](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/offshore-crypto-license/): Offshore crypto licensing: what an offshore crypto licence is, where it is recognised (Seychelles, Cayman Islands, Vanuatu, Belize, BVI), why operators choose one, the banking and reputational challenges, and how offshore compares to an EU MiCA CASP for market access.
- [Seychelles Crypto Licence](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/seychelles-crypto-license/): Per-jurisdiction guide to the Seychelles VASP licence under the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act 2024: FSA licence categories, minimum capital by category, local substance, timeline, indicative first-year cost bands, FATF status, and whether a Seychelles licence can actually be banked. Figures presented as indicative ranges pending confirmation against the current FSA schedule.
- [Lithuania Crypto Licence (MiCA CASP)](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/lithuania-crypto-license/): Per-jurisdiction guide to a Lithuanian crypto licence under MiCA: the transition from the old FCIS-era VASP registration to a Bank of Lithuania CASP authorisation, capital tiers (EUR 50k/125k/150k by service class), timeline, local director/office/MLRO substance, EU passporting, and the transitional deadline. Positioned around choosing the CASP jurisdiction for banking recognition, not just approval speed.
- [St Vincent (SVG) Crypto Licence](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/st-vincent-crypto-license/): Honest per-jurisdiction guide to St Vincent and the Grenadines: what SVG actually issues (a Business Company registration, and since 2022 a VASP registration under the Virtual Asset Business Act) versus a genuine licence, indicative cost and timeline, SVG's requirement of proof of regulation elsewhere for forex, and why banking an SVG structure is the hard part.
- [Vanuatu Crypto Licence](https://bankmycapital.com/crypto-licensing/vanuatu-crypto-license/): Per-jurisdiction guide to a Vanuatu crypto licence under the VASP Act No. 3 of 2025: the VFSC regime on a Financial Dealers Licence base, the materially higher unimpaired-capital requirement (approximately VT 200,000,000), local substance, timeline, per-class fees, and the banking difficulty. Explains why Vanuatu is no longer the cheap, fast route.
- [Crypto industry page](https://bankmycapital.com/industries/crypto/): Banking for exchanges, VASPs, on/off-ramps, custody providers, and token issuers. Covers VASP/CASP/MiCA structuring ahead of banking applications, since unregistered crypto flow discovered post-approval is the most common reason crypto operators lose their banking.
- [iGaming industry page](https://bankmycapital.com/industries/igaming/): Banking for casinos, sportsbooks, and platforms licensed under MGA, Curaçao, and adjacent regimes. Covers licence-matched acquirer placement and chargeback-ratio management ahead of the VAMP/card-scheme enforcement thresholds.
- [Forex industry page](https://bankmycapital.com/industries/forex/): Settlement banking and acquiring for FX brokers and prop firms, including client-fund segregation as a regulatory condition. Matches brokers to EMIs whose core product is segregated accounts, rather than generalist banks lacking that product.
- [Adult industry page](https://bankmycapital.com/industries/adult/): Banking and payment processing for adult content platforms and dating businesses facing MCC-based de-risking and category-wide processor exits. Covers dual-acquirer setups and underwriting files that document content-moderation and age-verification controls directly.
- [Industries overview](https://bankmycapital.com/industries/): The four verticals worked in depth: iGaming & betting, adult & dating, crypto & Web3, and forex & trading. Includes a why-declined vs what-we-place comparison per sector, indicative placement timelines, and links to each vertical's dedicated page.
- [Banking by Jurisdiction (hub)](https://bankmycapital.com/banking-by-jurisdiction/): Where high-risk businesses actually get banked, organised by jurisdiction and by the three banking tiers (Tier-1 EU/EEA banks, specialist EMIs, and offshore). Guides for every major gaming, forex, crypto and EMI jurisdiction, cross-linked to the relevant licensing and industry pages.
- [Licensing by Jurisdiction (hub)](https://bankmycapital.com/licensing-by-jurisdiction/): Which gaming and forex licences actually get a business banked, organised by tier and by jurisdiction. Includes an honest flag on one jurisdiction BMC recommends against and three "licences" that are not licences at all, plus links to the deep-dive crypto-licensing pages.
- [Pre-approval check](https://bankmycapital.com/pre-approval/): Free, confidential five-question directional read: industry, need, situation, volume, incorporation jurisdiction. Nothing typed, nothing stored beyond the click-through answers. The instant read is followed, on request, by a written, case-specific answer from a principal within 48 hours, still free, win or lose.
- [Tools & calculators](https://bankmycapital.com/tools/): Free, ungated calculators for high-risk operators: crypto-licence cost and timeline, rolling-reserve cost, a bankability score, and a bank-matcher. Indicative only, no email wall, built to help an operator self-qualify before a pre-approval check.
- [Crypto Licence Cost & Timeline Calculator](https://bankmycapital.com/tools/crypto-license-cost-calculator/): Turns jurisdiction and activity into an indicative year-1 cost band, minimum-capital floor, and timeline, covering MiCA CASP, legacy national VASP registration, and offshore crypto licences side by side.
- [Rolling Reserve Calculator](https://bankmycapital.com/tools/rolling-reserve-calculator/): Estimates how much cash a rolling reserve traps, the annual cost of that trapped capital, and an operator's effective all-in processing rate once the reserve is priced in, not just the headline discount rate.
- [Bankability Score](https://bankmycapital.com/tools/bankability-score/): Eight questions produce a 0-100 bankability score, an honest read of where the business currently sits, and prioritised remediation moves before it applies to a bank or EMI.
- [Which Bank Will Take My Business? (matcher)](https://bankmycapital.com/tools/bank-matcher/): Vertical and jurisdiction inputs map to a realistic banking route — bank, EMI, or specialist EMI — and which of the three banking tiers the business realistically sits in. Indicative only, no email wall.
- [Case studies index](https://bankmycapital.com/case-studies/): Anonymized composites of real placement patterns since 2018 across crypto, iGaming, forex, adult, payments, and licensing. Identifying details are shifted and no client is identifiable, including to the institutions involved. Includes one deliberate non-win: a case BMC declined at intake.
- [FAQ](https://bankmycapital.com/faq/): Straight answers grouped by anxiety: will this work for me, what does it cost (floor of 1,500 EUR plus institution onboarding fees, free if the answer is no), can I trust you (no client logos, house byline "Stanley Myers", NDA from message one, not a bank), process (2-3 weeks typical for a pre-vetted file), and edge cases (MATCH list, frozen funds, prior self-applications).
- [Glossary index](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/): 54 plain-English definitions of the vocabulary of high-risk banking and payments — de-risking, MATCH list, rolling reserve, chargeback ratio/VAMP, MCC, EMI, correspondent banking, KYB, VASP, CASP, MiCA, segregated accounts, acquirer, PSP, settlement, SWIFT/SEPA, offboarding, underwriting — each with a quotable definition and an operator consequence backed by a real number.
- [About BankMyCapital](https://bankmycapital.com/about-us/): Since 2018: pre-approval over introductions, a published pricing floor, and boutique discretion across one senior collective spanning formation, licensing, banking and payment processing. Key numbers: 87% approval rate on cases taken, 300+ businesses placed, 50+ banking/EMI partners, 2-3 week typical timeline, 73% of clients arriving after prior rejections elsewhere. Used for the same client-discretion reasons BMC does not publish client logos.

## Glossary (full detail)

- [De-risking](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/de-risking/): De-risking is a bank’s decision to exit or refuse entire categories of client, rather than assess each business individually, in order to avoid the compliance cost of monitoring them. It is a portfolio-level policy, not a verdict on any single company. A de-risking policy can close your account with no warning even if your file is clean, because the decision is made about your sector, not your business. Operators who plan for one bank alone typically lose 100% of their processing the day a policy shifts; a second live relationship keeps that number at roughly 50%.
- [MATCH List (TMF)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/match-list/): MATCH (Mastercard’s Member Alert to Control High-risk Merchants), often called the Terminated Merchant File or TMF, is a shared database acquirers check before onboarding a new merchant. A listing flags that a prior acquirer terminated the business, usually for excessive chargebacks, fraud, or a card-scheme violation. A MATCH listing typically stays visible to acquirers for 5 years, and most mainstream acquirers decline on sight, cutting your realistic applicant pool by roughly 70-80% for that period. Removal is not something any consultancy can broker; the path forward is a listed-merchant-friendly acquirer, not an erased record.
- [Rolling Reserve](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/rolling-reserve/): A rolling reserve is a percentage of each settlement an acquirer withholds for a set period, typically 90-180 days, to cover potential future chargebacks or refunds before releasing it back to the merchant. It is standard on high-risk MCCs, not a penalty for a specific business. A 10% reserve on 200,000 EUR of monthly volume holds 20,000 EUR of your own cash at any given time, compounding to roughly 60,000-120,000 EUR sitting with the acquirer once the 90-180 day hold period fills. Reserve percentage and hold length are both negotiable at placement, not fixed by default.
- [Chargeback Ratio (VAMP)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/chargeback-ratio/): Chargeback ratio is the share of transactions disputed by cardholders against total transaction count in a given month. Visa’s VAMP (Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program), replacing the older VDMP, tracks a blended fraud-and-dispute ratio and enforces a 1.5% early-warning threshold from 2026, tightening from the prior 0.9% dispute-only standard. Crossing VAMP’s 1.5% threshold triggers acquirer review and possible fines that typically run from roughly 5,000 to 25,000 USD per month above-threshold, before any account closure. A business processing 500,000 EUR a month at a 2% ratio is already inside the enforcement band and should expect an acquirer call, not a warning email.
- [MCC (Merchant Category Code)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/mcc/): A Merchant Category Code is a four-digit number card networks assign to classify what a merchant sells, used by acquirers and issuers to price risk and route transactions. High-risk verticals sit on specific codes, for example MCC 5967 for adult content and direct-marketing services. The wrong or misrepresented MCC is the single most common reason an account gets frozen mid-life: acquirers monitor transaction patterns against the declared code, and a mismatch can trigger a review that holds 100% of pending settlement until it resolves. Getting the MCC right at onboarding avoids a freeze most operators do not see coming for months.
- [EMI (Electronic Money Institution)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/emi/): An Electronic Money Institution is a regulated entity, licensed separately from a bank, authorized to issue e-money and provide payment accounts and services. EMIs generally hold client funds in safeguarded accounts rather than lending them out, which shapes both their risk appetite and their limits. An EMI account typically opens in 2-3 weeks against 8-12 weeks for a comparable bank account, but usually caps daily transaction volume and offers no deposit guarantee scheme, so a business moving above roughly 500,000 EUR a month often needs a bank relationship behind the EMI, not instead of it.
- [Correspondent Banking](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/correspondent-banking/): Correspondent banking is the arrangement where one bank holds accounts for and executes payments on behalf of another bank, usually to reach currencies or jurisdictions the first bank cannot access directly. Most cross-border EMI and offshore-bank settlement depends on a correspondent relationship somewhere in the chain. A correspondent bank that de-risks an entire vertical can cut off your EMI or offshore bank’s SWIFT access with no notice to you, since you are two steps removed from the actual relationship. A business with a single settlement path through one correspondent chain is exposed to a policy decision it will never see coming.
- [KYB (Know Your Business)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/kyb/): Know Your Business is the due-diligence process banks, EMIs, and acquirers run to verify a corporate applicant: beneficial ownership, incorporation documents, source of funds, and the nature of the business itself. It is the corporate counterpart to KYC (Know Your Customer), which verifies individuals. An incomplete KYB file is the reason roughly half of first-time high-risk applications stall past 30 days, not because the business is unbankable but because ownership structure or source-of-funds documentation was missing at submission. A complete file cuts that review window to 1-2 weeks in most cases.
- [VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/vasp/): A Virtual Asset Service Provider is a business registered or licensed to exchange, custody, or transfer crypto assets on behalf of customers, a classification introduced by the FATF Travel Rule and adopted into national registration regimes across most jurisdictions that touch fiat rails. Operating fiat on/off-ramps without VASP registration in the right jurisdiction is the single most common reason crypto operators get their banking closed after the fact, typically within 3-6 months of a bank discovering unregistered crypto flow. Registering before you apply for banking, not after, is what keeps the relationship open.
- [CASP (Crypto-Asset Service Provider)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/casp/): Crypto-Asset Service Provider is the MiCA-era EU term replacing national VASP registrations for firms providing custody, exchange, trading platform, or advisory services on crypto-assets. A CASP license, once granted in one EU member state, passports across the whole bloc under MiCA’s single-license model. The transition deadline pushed national VASP registrations out of validity across the EU, so a crypto business still trading on a pre-MiCA registration risks its EU banking access lapsing at the same moment its license does. A single CASP license replaces what used to require separate registration in every member state you served.
- [MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/mica/): MiCA is the EU’s harmonized regulatory framework for crypto-assets, covering issuers of asset-referenced and e-money tokens plus CASPs providing exchange, custody, and trading services. It replaces a patchwork of 27 national regimes with one license valid across the bloc. A crypto business banking in even one EU member state now needs a MiCA-compliant structure, and banks increasingly decline crypto clients outright who cannot show a CASP license path, closing off roughly two dozen national markets at once to unregistered operators. Structuring for MiCA before approaching a bank changes that conversation from a refusal to a review.
- [Segregated Account](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/segregated-account/): A segregated account holds client funds separately from a firm’s own operating capital, so client money is never at risk if the firm becomes insolvent. It is a standard regulatory requirement for EMIs, forex brokers handling client deposits, and licensed gaming operators holding player funds. Forex and iGaming regulators typically require segregation before granting or renewing a license, and a bank that discovers commingled client funds can close the account within days regardless of your compliance record elsewhere. Setting up segregation correctly at account opening avoids a rebuild that otherwise costs weeks of frozen operations.
- [Acquirer](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/acquirer/): An acquirer is the bank or financial institution that processes card payments on a merchant’s behalf, settling funds from the card networks into the merchant’s account. High-risk acquirers specialize in MCCs and volume profiles that mainstream acquirers decline, at correspondingly different pricing and reserve terms. A business running on a single acquirer has exactly one point of failure: when that acquirer terminates over a ratio breach or a policy shift, 100% of card processing stops the same day. A second acquirer on separate rails turns a shutdown into a routing switch, typically restoring full volume within 24-48 hours.
- [PSP (Payment Service Provider)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/psp/): A Payment Service Provider aggregates payment processing for merchants, typically holding the direct acquirer relationship itself and onboarding merchants under its own risk appetite, rather than each merchant applying to an acquirer directly. It trades faster onboarding for less negotiating leverage on reserve terms. A PSP can typically onboard a high-risk merchant in days rather than the 4-8 weeks a direct acquirer relationship takes, but usually caps monthly volume around 50,000-100,000 EUR before requiring a graduation to direct acquiring. Businesses that outgrow a PSP without a plan often face a second onboarding process mid-scale, not a smooth upgrade.
- [Settlement](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/settlement/): Settlement is the transfer of cleared transaction funds from the card network or payment rail into the merchant’s bank account, net of fees, chargebacks, and any reserve withheld. Settlement cycles for high-risk merchants typically run T+3 to T+30, compared to T+1 or T+2 for standard-risk accounts. A jump from a T+2 to a T+14 settlement cycle on 300,000 EUR of monthly volume ties up roughly 140,000 EUR of cash flow at any moment, which is often the real cost operators miss when comparing acquirer offers on headline rate alone. Negotiating settlement speed matters as much as the percentage fee.
- [SWIFT / SEPA](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/swift-sepa/): SWIFT is the global messaging network banks use to instruct cross-border wire transfers; SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is the EU scheme for standardized euro transfers between member-state banks, typically same-day or next-day. A business banking outside the EU usually needs SWIFT access even to move euros. A EUR account without SEPA access, common with some offshore EMIs, forces every euro payment through SWIFT at fees roughly 10-20x higher per transaction and settlement times of 1-3 days instead of same-day. Confirming SEPA reachability before opening an account avoids a cost that only surfaces on the first real invoice run.
- [Offboarding](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/offboarding/): Offboarding is a bank or acquirer’s process for closing an existing account, typically triggered by a compliance review, a policy change on the client’s sector, or a ratio breach, rather than a specific fraud finding. Notice periods range from immediate freezes to 30-90 days, depending on the institution and jurisdiction. An offboarding notice with a 30-day window sounds generous until you realize a same-industry replacement account often takes 4-8 weeks to open from scratch, leaving a gap where 100% of transaction volume has nowhere to land. Starting a backup relationship before offboarding happens, not after the notice arrives, is what closes that gap.
- [Underwriting](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/underwriting/): Underwriting is the risk-assessment process a bank, EMI, or acquirer runs on an applicant before approval: verifying ownership, source of funds, transaction history, and sector-specific risk factors against the institution’s published or internal risk appetite. It happens once at onboarding and again periodically as a review. Most high-risk rejections trace back to a file that never matched the underwriting standard of the institution it was submitted to, not to the business being unbankable, and a mismatched application can burn 6-8 weeks before the decline even arrives. Matching the file to the right underwriter’s actual risk appetite before submitting is what changes that outcome.
- [KYC (Know Your Customer)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/kyc/): Know Your Customer is the process of verifying the identity of an individual customer: their name, address, date of birth, and identity documents, before and during a business relationship. It is the individual counterpart to KYB, which verifies corporate applicants rather than people. Weak customer KYC is a common trigger for a bank review of the whole business, and gaps found during a periodic check can freeze an account within days. A gaming or forex operator onboarding thousands of users needs KYC that scales, or roughly 5-15% of sign-ups stall in manual review and never fund.
- [AML (Anti-Money Laundering)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/aml/): Anti-Money Laundering is the framework of laws, controls, and monitoring a regulated firm must run to detect and prevent the movement of illicit funds. It covers customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and reporting suspicious activity to a national financial intelligence unit. A bank that judges your AML programme inadequate will decline or offboard regardless of how clean your transactions are, and building a compliant framework after a refusal typically adds 2-3 months before you can reapply. High-risk sectors are assessed on AML maturity first, commercial fit second.
- [CDD (Customer Due Diligence)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/cdd/): Customer Due Diligence is the baseline set of checks a regulated firm performs on every customer: verifying identity, understanding the purpose of the relationship, and assessing the risk they present. It is the standard tier of diligence, escalating to enhanced due diligence for higher-risk cases. CDD applied inconsistently is a frequent finding in bank reviews, and a portfolio where roughly a fifth of files lack complete CDD can put the whole banking relationship under notice. Getting CDD right at onboarding is cheaper than remediating a back book under a regulator or bank deadline.
- [EDD (Enhanced Due Diligence)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/edd/): Enhanced Due Diligence is the deeper set of checks a firm applies to higher-risk customers: politically exposed persons, high-value clients, or those in high-risk jurisdictions. It goes beyond standard CDD to verify source of funds, source of wealth, and ongoing transaction patterns in more detail. High-risk operators are usually the party that must run EDD on their own customers, and a bank will check whether you do before it approves you. Missing EDD on the roughly 5-10% of customers who need it is enough on its own to fail a banking review, regardless of overall volume quality.
- [MLRO (Money Laundering Reporting Officer)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/mlro/): A Money Laundering Reporting Officer is the named individual a regulated firm appoints to oversee its AML programme and file suspicious activity reports with the national financial intelligence unit. In most licensed regimes the role is a regulatory requirement, with personal accountability attached. A licence application or bank onboarding often stalls when there is no credible named MLRO in place, since the institution needs a real point of accountability to assess. Recruiting a qualified MLRO can add 4-8 weeks to a launch timeline, so treating it as a founding hire rather than an afterthought avoids the delay.
- [PEP (Politically Exposed Person)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/pep/): A Politically Exposed Person is an individual entrusted with a prominent public function, along with their close associates and family, who therefore carries a higher risk of bribery or corruption. Being a PEP is not a wrongdoing finding; it is a risk flag that requires enhanced due diligence. A PEP anywhere in your ownership structure or customer base triggers enhanced due diligence and slows onboarding, and an undisclosed PEP discovered later is treated as a red flag that can close an account. Screening for PEPs before you apply avoids a delay that otherwise adds 2-4 weeks mid-review.
- [UBO (Ultimate Beneficial Owner)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/ubo/): An Ultimate Beneficial Owner is the natural person who ultimately owns or controls a company, typically defined as holding more than 25% of shares or voting rights, or otherwise exercising control. Identifying every UBO behind layered holding structures is a core part of KYB. Opaque or layered ownership is one of the fastest routes to a decline, because a bank that cannot identify every UBO to the 25% threshold will not take the risk. Mapping your full ownership chain before you apply prevents a back-and-forth that commonly adds 3-6 weeks to onboarding.
- [Source of Funds](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/source-of-funds/): Source of funds is the documented origin of the specific money moving through an account: where a given deposit or the working capital actually came from. It differs from source of wealth, which explains how a person or company built their overall assets over time. Unexplained inbound funds are among the top reasons a high-risk account gets frozen mid-life, and clearing a hold usually means producing documentation a firm should have gathered at onboarding. Having source-of-funds evidence ready before the first large transaction avoids a freeze that can lock 100% of a balance for weeks.
- [Sanctions Screening](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/sanctions-screening/): Sanctions screening is the checking of customers, counterparties, and transactions against government and international sanctions lists, such as those maintained by the UN, EU, OFAC, and the UK. A positive match must be blocked and, in most regimes, reported to the relevant authority. A single processed transaction touching a sanctioned party can expose a business to severe penalties and immediate offboarding, which is why banks insist on screening before they onboard high-risk clients. Robust screening at onboarding and on every payment is non-negotiable for keeping a cross-border account open.
- [Travel Rule](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/travel-rule/): The Travel Rule is a FATF requirement that obliges virtual asset service providers to collect and pass on originator and beneficiary information alongside crypto transfers above a set threshold, mirroring the data long required for traditional wire transfers under FATF Recommendation 16. A crypto business that cannot demonstrate Travel Rule compliance will struggle to keep fiat banking, since banks increasingly require it before onboarding VASPs. Building Travel Rule handling into your stack before you approach a bank is what turns a crypto banking conversation from a decline into a review.
- [SAR (Suspicious Activity Report)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/sar/): A Suspicious Activity Report is the formal report a regulated firm, through its MLRO, files with the national financial intelligence unit when it suspects a transaction or customer may involve money laundering or other financial crime. Filing is a legal obligation, and tipping off the customer is prohibited. A high-risk operator is usually a reporting entity in its own right, and a firm that files no SARs at all can look as suspicious to a regulator as one that files too many. Having a working SAR process in place is part of the AML maturity a bank checks before it will onboard you.
- [Adverse Media Screening](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/adverse-media/): Adverse media screening is the checking of a customer, owner, or counterparty against negative news sources: reports of fraud, regulatory action, sanctions, or criminal association. It supplements formal list screening by catching risk that has surfaced publicly but not yet reached an official list. A single unaddressed adverse-media hit on a beneficial owner can stall or reverse an onboarding decision, since a bank will not knowingly take reputational risk. Running adverse-media checks on your own structure before you apply lets you explain any hit on your terms rather than have it surface mid-review.
- [IBAN (International Bank Account Number)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/iban/): An IBAN is the standardised format for identifying a bank account across borders, encoding the country, bank, and account number in a single string. It is what a counterparty uses to send you a SEPA or SWIFT payment, and its country prefix reveals where the account is held. The country code in your IBAN can quietly cost you business, because some customers and platforms reject non-local IBANs even where doing so is unlawful under SEPA rules. A local-looking IBAN in your customers’ market can lift payment acceptance by a meaningful margin over an offshore prefix.
- [IBAN Discrimination](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/iban-discrimination/): IBAN discrimination is a business rejecting a payment or direct debit because the customer’s IBAN is from a different SEPA country than expected. It is prohibited under EU SEPA regulation, which requires any SEPA IBAN to be accepted, yet it persists widely in practice. If your provider issues, say, a Lithuanian IBAN and your customers are in France or Germany, real-world rejection at checkout or direct-debit setup can cost you a slice of conversions despite the practice being unlawful. Choosing account geography around where you actually collect avoids friction the rules alone do not remove.
- [Safeguarding](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/safeguarding/): Safeguarding is the regulatory obligation on EMIs and payment institutions to protect customer funds by holding them separately from the firm’s own money, typically in a segregated account at a credit institution or covered by an insurance arrangement, so customers are repaid if the firm fails. Safeguarding failures are among the most common reasons a regulator restricts or withdraws a payments licence, and a safeguarding account is itself a banking relationship that has to be placed and kept. A payments firm that loses its safeguarding bank can be forced to stop taking customer funds within days.
- [Multi-Currency Account](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/multi-currency-account/): A multi-currency account holds and transacts in several currencies from a single account, letting a business receive, hold, and pay out in each without a forced conversion on every transaction. It typically provides local receiving details in the main currencies it supports. A business paid in several currencies but banking in one loses roughly 1-3% to conversion on every inbound and outbound transaction, which on cross-border volume compounds fast. Holding balances natively in your main currencies keeps that margin instead of handing it to an FX spread.
- [High-Risk Merchant](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/high-risk-merchant/): A high-risk merchant is a business that card networks and acquirers classify as carrying elevated risk of chargebacks, fraud, or regulatory exposure, based on its industry, model, or history. Crypto, iGaming, forex, adult, and certain subscription models sit in this category by default. A high-risk classification narrows your realistic acquirer pool to specialists and typically raises pricing and reserve terms above standard-risk rates, so the same volume costs more to process. Being classified high-risk is not a verdict on your business; it is the starting point for finding the acquirers who price that risk instead of declining it.
- [Pre-Approval](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/pre-approval/): Pre-approval is an informal read on whether an institution is likely to accept an applicant before a formal application is filed, based on the business profile, jurisdiction, and file quality. It surfaces a realistic yes or no early, without the applicant burning a formal decline on their record. A formal decline can leave a trace that later applications have to explain, so testing appetite through pre-approval first protects your record while you find the right fit. It also compresses the search: instead of applying blind and waiting 4-8 weeks per attempt, you shortlist institutions that have already signalled interest.
- [De-banking](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/de-banking/): De-banking is the closure of an individual or business account by a bank that no longer wants the relationship, often for risk or reputational reasons rather than any specific wrongdoing. It is the account-level outcome that a sector-wide de-risking policy produces for a particular customer. A de-banked business can lose its primary account with limited notice and no right of appeal, and rebuilding from scratch in the same sector commonly takes 4-8 weeks with no guarantee. Keeping a live second relationship turns de-banking from an existential event into a routing change.
- [MDR (Merchant Discount Rate)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/mdr/): The Merchant Discount Rate is the total percentage an acquirer or PSP charges a merchant on each card transaction, bundling interchange, card-scheme fees, and the processor’s own margin. It is the headline processing cost a merchant sees, though it hides how that cost breaks down. High-risk MDRs commonly run several times standard-risk rates, so a business processing 300,000 EUR a month can pay tens of thousands more a year than a low-risk merchant on identical volume. Understanding what sits inside the MDR is what lets you tell a fair high-risk price from an inflated one.
- [Interchange](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/interchange/): Interchange is the fee the card-issuing bank charges on each transaction, set by the card networks and passed through to the merchant as part of the processing cost. It is a floor the acquirer cannot go below, which is why it anchors any honest pricing conversation. Interchange is largely fixed, so the part of your rate a provider can actually compete on is the margin above it. An interchange-plus quote makes that margin visible, while a blended rate hides it, which on high volume can mask a spread worth thousands a month.
- [3D Secure (3DS)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/3d-secure/): 3D Secure is the authentication layer that verifies a cardholder during an online purchase, through the card networks’ programmes such as Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check. Under EU rules it underpins strong customer authentication, and it can shift chargeback liability from the merchant to the issuer. For a high-risk merchant, 3DS is a lever on the chargeback ratio that governs whether an acquirer keeps you: authenticated transactions move fraud-based dispute liability to the issuer, which can cut chargebacks materially. Tuning 3DS so it protects the ratio without killing conversion is a core part of staying under threshold.
- [Chargeback Representment](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/chargeback-representment/): Chargeback representment is the process of contesting a disputed transaction by submitting evidence to the issuing bank that the charge was valid: proof of delivery, authentication records, and terms accepted. A successful representment reverses the chargeback and recovers the funds. Every chargeback counts toward the ratio that decides whether an acquirer keeps you, so winning representments does more than recover cash: it defends the metric that governs your account. Operators with a disciplined representment process routinely recover a meaningful share of disputes that would otherwise push the ratio toward threshold.
- [MSB (Money Services Business)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/msb/): A Money Services Business is a firm that transmits money, exchanges currency, or deals in similar services, subject to registration and AML obligations in most jurisdictions. Crypto exchanges, remittance firms, and some payment operators fall under an MSB classification depending on the regime. MSBs are treated as high-risk by most banks, so an MSB applying for banking without the right registration and AML programme is usually declined on sight. Getting the MSB registration and compliance stack right before you approach a bank is what moves the conversation from a refusal to a review.
- [Authorisation Rate](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/authorisation-rate/): Authorisation rate is the share of attempted transactions that issuing banks approve rather than decline. It is driven by card data quality, issuer risk models, 3D Secure configuration, and how well the transaction is routed, and it sits alongside the chargeback ratio as a core processing metric. A few points of authorisation rate is pure revenue: a business at an 82% approval rate versus 90% is losing roughly one in twelve otherwise-valid sales at checkout. For high-risk merchants, routing and 3DS tuning to lift authorisation often matters more to the bottom line than shaving the headline rate.
- [APM (Alternative Payment Method)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/apm/): An Alternative Payment Method is any way to pay that is not a traditional card: bank transfers, e-wallets, open banking, vouchers, and local schemes. In many markets an APM is the dominant way customers actually pay, and some carry lower chargeback risk than cards. Relying on cards alone can quietly cap conversion in markets where a local APM dominates, sometimes leaving a double-digit share of potential customers unable to pay their preferred way. Adding the right APMs both widens reach and can lower the blended chargeback exposure that governs your card acquiring.
- [EMI Licence](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/emi-licence/): An EMI licence is the authorisation a regulator grants a firm to operate as an Electronic Money Institution: issuing e-money and providing payment accounts and services. It carries capital, safeguarding, and governance requirements, and in the EU it can be passported across member states. Holding your own EMI licence replaces renting access through a third-party provider, removing a dependency that can be withdrawn and giving you direct scheme and banking relationships. Authorisation typically takes 6-12 months and meaningful capital, so it is a strategic move for firms at scale, not a quick fix for an account problem.
- [Payment Institution (PI)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/payment-institution/): A Payment Institution is a firm licensed to provide payment services, such as executing transfers, acquiring transactions, or issuing payment instruments, without issuing e-money. It sits alongside the EMI as the other main non-bank payments licence, with a lighter scope and often lower capital. Choosing between a PI and an EMI licence sets your permitted activities and capital for years, and picking the wrong one means reapplying or restructuring later. A PI is usually faster and cheaper to obtain than an EMI but cannot hold e-money balances, so matching the licence to your actual model at the outset avoids a costly redo.
- [Capital Requirement](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/capital-requirement/): A capital requirement is the minimum amount of own funds a regulator obliges a licensed payments or e-money firm to hold, sized to its licence type and activity, so it can absorb losses and wind down safely. It is initial capital plus an ongoing amount that scales with the business. Underestimating capital is a frequent reason a licence application stalls or a live firm falls into breach, and a capital shortfall found in a review can restrict operations fast. Sizing capital correctly before you apply, initial and ongoing, is what keeps a licence application on schedule rather than sent back for rework.
- [FCA (Financial Conduct Authority)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/fca/): The Financial Conduct Authority is the United Kingdom’s regulator for financial services firms, including EMIs, payment institutions, and many crypto businesses for AML purposes. It authorises firms, sets conduct rules, and can restrict or withdraw permissions where a firm falls short. An FCA authorisation or registration is a demanding, months-long process, and the UK crypto AML register in particular has approved only a fraction of applicants. Knowing whether the FCA is the right regulator for your model, and preparing to its standard, decides whether you spend those months once or twice.
- [MGA (Malta Gaming Authority)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/mga/): The Malta Gaming Authority is Malta’s regulator for online and land-based gaming, and one of the most widely recognised iGaming licensors. An MGA licence signals a regulated operator to payment providers and banks, and it carries player-fund, AML, and reporting obligations. For an iGaming operator, the gaming licence and the banking are linked: many acquirers and banks will only touch licensed operators, so the MGA route often has to be sequenced ahead of, or alongside, the banking search. Treating licence and banking as one project rather than two avoids a gap where you are licensed but cannot get paid.
- [CySEC (Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/cysec/): The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission is Cyprus’s financial regulator, widely used to license forex and investment firms operating across the EU. A CySEC licence lets a firm passport investment services throughout the bloc and carries capital, client-money, and conduct requirements. For a forex broker, the CySEC licence and the banking are interdependent: client-money segregation is both a licence condition and a banking prerequisite, so the two have to be built together. Sequencing the licence and the segregated banking as one project avoids being authorised but unable to hold client deposits.
- [On/Off-Ramp](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/on-off-ramp/): An on-ramp converts fiat currency into crypto; an off-ramp converts crypto back into fiat. Together they are the bridge between the banking system and blockchain networks, and they are the exact point where a crypto business most needs, and most often loses, a banking relationship. Fiat on/off-ramps are where crypto flow meets the bank, and it is precisely here that de-risking bites: a bank uncomfortable with crypto exposure will close the account that clears these flows. Structuring on/off-ramp banking with a VASP-aware provider is what keeps the fiat side of a crypto business running.
- [Chain Analytics](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/chain-analytics/): Chain analytics is the analysis of blockchain transactions to trace the origin, destination, and risk of crypto funds, using tools that score wallets and flag exposure to sanctioned addresses, mixers, or illicit sources. It is the crypto-native counterpart to traditional transaction monitoring. A crypto business that cannot show chain-analytics screening will struggle to keep fiat banking, since banks increasingly require evidence that inbound crypto is not tainted. Building chain analytics into your compliance stack before you apply is part of what turns a crypto banking application from a decline into a review.
- [Stablecoin](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/stablecoin/): A stablecoin is a crypto-asset designed to hold a steady value by referencing a fiat currency or other asset, most commonly the US dollar. Under MiCA, fiat-referenced stablecoins are regulated as e-money tokens or asset-referenced tokens, with issuer, reserve, and disclosure requirements. A business settling in stablecoins still needs a compliant fiat bridge and, in the EU, exposure to MiCA’s token rules, so treating stablecoin flow as outside the regulatory perimeter is a common and costly mistake. Structuring stablecoin settlement with the right licensing and banking is what keeps it usable at scale.
- [FIU (Financial Intelligence Unit)](https://bankmycapital.com/glossary/fiu/): A Financial Intelligence Unit is the national body that receives, analyses, and acts on suspicious activity reports and other financial-crime intelligence from regulated firms. Every jurisdiction with an AML regime has an FIU, and it is the authority a firm’s MLRO reports suspicious activity to. Knowing which FIU you report to, and being set up to file with it, is part of the AML readiness a bank or regulator checks before onboarding or licensing a high-risk firm. A business that cannot name its reporting channel signals an immature compliance function, which weighs against it in any review.
