Unbankable to banked, by building the compliance file first

01Situation

An adult content studio had revenue, creators and a working site, but nothing a compliance officer could read. Performer verification happened informally, the site carried no published policies, and record-keeping lived in spreadsheets. Two banks had already declined.

The studio read the declines as anti-adult prejudice. Some of it was. But the file genuinely could not answer the questions any regulated institution has to ask before it takes on an adult-content merchant.

What was actually broken
02Diagnosis

The declines were not purely categorical. A bank underwriting adult content has to satisfy itself on performer age and consent verification, content moderation, and takedown handling. This studio did all three in practice and could evidence none of them, so the application failed on documentation rather than on conduct.

Creator payouts were the second problem. Paying a growing roster individually by bank transfer looks, from the outside, like unexplained outbound volume to many individuals in many countries, which is exactly the pattern that triggers a review.

The route we placed
03Mechanism

Jurisdiction and structure type only. We never name the institutions involved.

  • 1

We built the compliance layer before approaching any institution: a documented performer verification and record-keeping process, published site policies covering age verification, consent, content moderation and takedown, and a retention schedule an auditor could follow.

  • 2

We placed the operating account with an EMI whose stated appetite covers adult content, presenting the new compliance file as the substance of the application rather than asking for an exception.

  • 3

We arranged access to a mass payout rail through a provider whose API handles many small cross-border payments as a structured batch, so creator payments present as an explained payroll-type flow rather than as scattered outbound transfers.

Week by week
04Timeline

Compliance first, then banking, then the payout rail the banking could support.

Week 1

Gap analysis

Established what a compliance officer would need to see and what the studio could already evidence, before any application went in.

Weeks 2-3

Compliance build

Documented performer verification and record-keeping, and published site policies covering age verification, consent, moderation and takedown.

Weeks 3-4

Operating account live

Adult-aware EMI approved on the strength of the new compliance file, not on an exception.

Weeks 4-5

Creator payouts live

Mass payout rail connected, so creator payments run as a structured batch rather than scattered individual transfers.

05Outcome
Prior position
2 declines, no documented compliance
Time to banking
4-5 weeks, including the compliance build
