A Malta licence used properly, corporate and owner banking in 5 weeks

01Situation

An operator had just been granted a Malta gaming licence and arrived before making a single banking application, which is unusual and is the reason this placement went as smoothly as it did. They needed corporate banking, card processing, and separate private accounts for the two beneficial owners.

The tier-1 licence was a genuine asset. The risk was wasting it by applying in the wrong order, to the wrong institutions, with the owners' personal banking tangled into the corporate file.

What was actually broken
02Diagnosis

A Malta licence opens doors that an offshore licence does not, but only where the institution actually recognises it. Applying broadly would have produced declines from banks with no gaming appetite at any licence tier, and those declines would then have sat in the file for the institutions that would have said yes.

Mixing the owners' personal banking into the corporate conversation is a common and avoidable error. Once a bank is asked to underwrite both the business and the individuals behind it in one review, the review slows and the weakest element sets the pace for everything.

The route we placed
03Mechanism

Jurisdiction and structure type only. We never name the institutions involved.

  • 1

We shortlisted only institutions with a documented book of MGA-licensed operators, so the licence was presented to underwriters who could price it rather than to generalists who would decline the category outright.

  • 2

We ran the corporate track and the owner track as two separate conversations with two separate sets of institutions, so neither could slow the other, and placed the owners' private accounts in a Bahamas structure kept deliberately independent of the operating company.

  • 3

We sequenced processing after corporate banking was live, so the acquiring application could point to a funded, operating account at a recognised institution instead of an empty entity.

Week by week
04Timeline

Licence first, then corporate banking, then processing, with the owners banked on a separate track.

Week 1

Institution shortlist

Narrowed to institutions with an existing book of MGA-licensed operators, ruling out the blanket-no banks before any name went on an application.

Weeks 2-3

Corporate banking live

EU corporate operating account approved against the Malta licence and the compliance file prepared alongside it.

Weeks 2-4

Owner accounts, separate track

Private accounts for the two beneficial owners opened in a Bahamas structure, run in parallel and kept independent of the operating company.

Weeks 4-5

Processing added

Card processing approved on top of a funded, operating corporate account rather than an empty entity.
