Hundreds of small payouts, and the account that stopped closing

01Situation

A webcam studio paying a large roster of models weekly had its account closed, not for anything it earned, but for how it paid. Hundreds of small outbound transfers to individuals in many countries, repeating every week, is a pattern that reads as something else entirely to a monitoring system that has not been told what it is looking at.

The studio was fully legitimate, paying performers on schedule. The bank never disputed that. It simply could not explain the pattern internally, so it exited.

What was actually broken
02Diagnosis

The closure was driven by outbound behaviour, not inbound revenue. High-frequency, low-value, many-beneficiary, many-country payouts trip the same monitoring rules as layering. Once flagged, the burden falls on the business to explain it, and by then the review is already adversarial.

Paying performers directly from the main operating account was the structural error. It put payroll-type activity through an account the bank was underwriting as a merchant account, so the two flows were assessed against the wrong expectations.

The route we placed
03Mechanism

Jurisdiction and structure type only. We never name the institutions involved.

  • 1

We placed the operating account with an EMI whose stated appetite covers adult content, and documented the payout model explicitly in the application, so the pattern was disclosed and understood before it appeared rather than discovered afterwards.

  • 2

We arranged a dedicated high-frequency payout rail through a provider built for many-beneficiary batches, separating performer payments from the operating account so each is assessed on the right expectations.

  • 3

We put a documented performer onboarding and verification record behind the payout file, so every beneficiary on the batch can be evidenced on request rather than defended after a freeze.

Week by week
04Timeline

Separate the payout flow, disclose it up front, and the pattern stops looking like a problem.

Week 1

Payout model documented

Wrote up the roster, cadence and verification records so the outbound pattern could be disclosed in the application.

Weeks 2-3

Operating account live

Adult-aware EMI approved with the payout model disclosed as part of the file, not discovered later.

Weeks 3-4

Payout rail separated

Dedicated many-beneficiary payout rail live, so performer payments no longer run through the merchant account.

05Outcome
